How Maya Learned About Curiosity
There are some adventures you go looking for, and some that come looking for you. The night Maya arrived in the City of Lanterns, it was very much the second kind. It was a place where every roof was a different color and paper lanterns floated lazily above the alleys.
It was there that Maya met a brave rabbit with one floppy ear, who could leap from any height and land light as a leaf. They became friends almost at once, the way that some friendships are simply meant to be. Before long, the two of them were walking together, listening to the chime of the cathedral telling the hour, talking quietly about nothing in particular and everything that mattered.
As they walked, a fountain in the main square shaped like an open book caught Maya's eye. A brave rabbit with one floppy ear smiled — or did the closest thing a ear can do to smile — and explained that this was one of the small wonders of the City of Lanterns. There were a great many such wonders, a brave rabbit with one floppy ear said, and Maya would meet them in their own time.
It was then that something happened. Maya noticed a small glowing thing resting in the grass that nobody had ever named. The whole of the City of Lanterns seemed to hold its breath, and even the chime of the cathedral telling the hour grew quiet. For a long moment, Maya thought very carefully. There were many things they could have done. Many things that would have been easier. But somewhere deep down, Maya already knew what was right.
And so, quietly and without any fuss, Maya looked closer when everyone else looked away, and asked one quiet, careful question. The air in the City of Lanterns changed at once. The chime of the cathedral telling the hour returned, softer than before, as if the whole place were saying thank you. A brave rabbit with one floppy ear looked at Maya with bright, proud eyes.
"You see," a brave rabbit with one floppy ear said gently, "that the best questions open doors that answers cannot." Maya nodded slowly. Somewhere inside, something settled — the way a small bird settles into a nest at dusk, knowing it is home and safe and ready to rest.
There would be other nights, of course, and other quiet adventures. But this one — the one in the City of Lanterns, with a brave rabbit with one floppy ear and the lesson they had learned together — this one Maya would carry forever.
